Common EV faults
Monday 17th June 2024
Your EV requires regular maintenance to ensure it runs smoothly. An electric car is more technologically advanced than a diesel or petrol-powered vehicle. This could mean complex repairs that can only be undertaken by a mechanic, specialising in EV repairs. Formula One Autocentres’ article covers common issues with your electric vehicle.
Software glitches
If you own an electric vehicle that’s four years old or older, you may encounter some software glitches, for example, the in-car touchscreen may not respond when you touch it. If you encounter a software glitch on your EV, the operating system software on your electric vehicle may need updating. Keeping the EV’s operating system up to date will reduce the likelihood of software glitches.
Battery degradation
Electric cars use lithium-ion batteries, which have an average lifespan of 10 years or 100,000 miles. The battery capacity of your EV will reduce gradually each year, affecting its range and overall performance. Staying on top of battery maintenance by following the manufacturer’s manual for battery care ensures your car performs at its best.
Worn brakes
EVs use regenerative braking which means the brake pads are not subject to as much wear and tear as they’re in a car that relies on a conventional braking system. If you regularly use regenerative braking on your EV, the brakes will be less effective when stopping in various situations. This could lead to the brake rotors being worn over time. Faulty seals
Poor or faulty seals can be hazardous as the electrical parts of your electric vehicle must be kept dry. Poor seals will also make the vehicle noisy and cause draughts.
Overheated motors
When it comes to common EV faults, overheated motors come to mind. There are many reasons why your electric car motors might overheat, including:
- Faulty or unsuitable motors
- Reduced or unstable coolant levels
- A damaged hose.
