How do EV chargers work?

Friday 10th May 2024

Knowing when and how to charge your electric vehicle is a concern many people have. However, transitioning from a petrol-powered car to an EV is easier than ever due to the number of charging stations installed up and down the UK. Formula One Autocentres explores the ins and outs of how an EV charger works.

What is an EV charger?

An EV charger supplies electrical power to recharge the battery of an EV. If you own an electric vehicle, you can recharge it via a public charger or your own private charger at home. However, how often you need to recharge your EV or how long this will take depends on the charging equipment used, whether you use a standard, fast or rapid charger to charge your electric vehicle.

Where do I start with EV charging?

Once you have leased or purchased an EV, there are a few steps to consider before you start charging:

  1. Decide which type of EV charger you want to install.
  1. How will your EV charging station be powered? Will it be run on renewable energy?
  1. The time taken for the charging station to charge your electric vehicle.

Can I install an EV charger at home?

Yes. You can install an EV charger at home, provided it’s installed by an approved, qualified electrician who specialises in installing EV chargers. The electrician will ensure it is installed safely and meets local regulations. Installing a standard 3.5kW or 7kW EV charger takes a couple of hours and may require little changes to your home’s power supply.

Will I need permission to install an EV charger?

If you own your own home and have a private driveway or garage, you won’t need planning permission to install an EV charger. However, if you rent your property or own a flat or apartment, you need permission from your property manager or landlord before considering an EV charger installation.

What equipment do I need to charge my EV?

The equipment you’ll need to charge your EV depends on whether you charge it in a public or private charging station. Ideally, you’ll need the following equipment:

  • A public or private EV charging point.
  • A charge cable to connect between the EV charging point and charging station, if you are using an untethered EV charger. (A tethered charger will have the charging cable permanently connected).
  • A smartphone or RFID (radio frequency identification) key for charging your vehicle.

How to charge your EV

While charging your EV can vary from station to station, it’s a simple process. Here’s how you can charge your electric vehicle in four steps:

  1. Your EV will usually come with a charging cable to use with an untethered EV charger when you purchase the car.
  2. Plug the charging cable into your EV and charging station.
  3. Start the charging session – this can be done automatically or via a smartphone app.
  4. End the charging session – once your car has been charged, you can stop charging it via an app. Once you’ve done this, unplug the charge cable from the vehicle, return it to the charge station or pop the cable in the boot.

How long does it take to charge an EV?

This depends on the size of the EV battery and the type of charger you’re using. Typically, an electric car can take from as little as half an hour or up to 48 hours to charge. When charging your EV, you’ll need to consider:

  • The size of the EV battery pack.
  • Weather conditions.
  • The condition of your EV battery.
  • The type of EV charging station you use – whether that’s a standard, fast or rapid charging station.
