Condensation in a car
As the winter months are upon us, condensation appearing in your car is more regular and can be frustrating – especially if you need to rush off in the mornings. But what exactly is condensation and how can it be prevented?
What causes condensation in a car?
Condensation inside your car occurs when the temperature inside your car is different from the outside of your car. When the warm air makes contact with a cold surface such as the windscreen or window, the moisture creates water vapour that then turns into water, which creates the mist and fog that can obstruct your vision. This can happen even after you have de-iced your car.
There may be some other reasons that can cause condensation. These include:
- Wet clothes, towels or other items – leaving damp or wet items such as an umbrella creates moisture in the air as it dries out, which can cause more mist
- Breathing – exhaled air contains a large amount of water vapour from passengers and pets
- No circulation of fresh air
As well as being a pain, if condensation in your car affects you from having a clear view of the road – it can also be illegal. This could lead to fines and points on your license which will ultimately hike up the cost of your car insurance.
Is condensation more common in modern cars?
In some cases, modern cars have improved seals which means they tend to be more watertight. This makes it more difficult for any moist air that is trapped inside the vehicle to escape. Enhanced insulation inside newer cars allows them to stay warmer for longer even after being parked. This means the longer the air inside the car is warmer than the temperature outside, the more condensation will appear.
How to prevent condensation in a car
When condensation collects in the air of the car, the level of moisture will increase. If the air is not vented, then the condensation problem will increase.
The most efficient and effective way to remove moisture from the air in your car is to use your air conditioning system installed in the vehicle. Essentially, this system draws air from the car through an evaporator which causes moisture in the air to condensate in a more controlled way and then drain out of the car. There are other ways to prevent condensation in a car, these include:
- Turn your heater on – start off by turning your heating on cold then turn up the temperature as the air dries out
- Roll down your windows – air your vehicle out especially if your air con is broken
- Clean your windows and car – condensation loves to cling to dirt, grime and dust particles. Use a high-quality window cleaner and a microfibre cloth to wipe the windows down inside and out as well as regularly cleaning your car as maintenance
- Avoid leaving wet items in your car – ensuring any wet or damp items don’t live in your car will reduce the chance of condensation and will take care of any musty, damp smell too.
