How to tell if you need new brakes
Monday 1st July 2024
Like many parts of your vehicle, the brakes need to be inspected and maintained regularly to ensure they work effectively. Over time, wear and tear on the braking system can lead to your car being unable to stop safely. Formula One Autocentres discovers the signs to watch out for if you need new brakes for your vehicle.
Your car pulls to one side
When pressing the brake pedal, you notice your car pulls to the left or right. This creates a dangerous scenario when driving on the road as the car won’t stop effectively, particularly in emergencies. Pulling while braking could be caused by a fault with your suspension system or tyres, but it might be related to uneven wear on the brake lining or a stuck calliper. If you notice your car is pulling to one side, you should get it serviced immediately.
Visible wear and tear on the brakes
Inspecting any visible wear and tear on the brakes can tell you about the health of your car’s braking system. This can be seen between the wheels’ spokes, pressed against the metal rotors. If the brake pads are less than a quarter-inch thick, they should be replaced with new ones.
The brake warning light is on
Have you started your car and found the brake warning light has come on the dashboard? It could signal low brake fluid or that the brake pads need replacing. Fully draining and replacing your brake fluid every 24,000 miles or every two years is essential for ensuring your car’s brakes stop effectively and safely.
The brakes are grinding
If you haven’t replaced your brake pads, you’ll hear a growling or grinding sound when braking, with rough metal scraping against metal. Over time, the pads will wear away and the brake callipers will make contact with the rotor discs. We recommend contacting your nearest Formula One Autocentres branch to replace the worn pads, rotors and discs on your vehicle’s braking system.
Reduced response time when braking
As your brakes begin to wear, their ability to stop safely will be reduced, leading to longer stopping distances. This means you will have to press the brake pedal earlier than you would do if the brakes were at peak performance. The issue may be caused by leaks in the brake lines or a drop in fluid pressure. If you notice reduced braking performance, you should get your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
