What makes a car a “classic”?
Monday 10th June 2024
Many vehicles can be considered classic due to their age, but certain models stand out from the crowd. These models may have introduced revolutionary innovations in design, safety and technology adopted by manufacturers over time. Discover what makes a car a classic in our helpful and informative guide.
The age of the car is the only legal definition of a classic vehicle
One aspect for classification is the age of the vehicle. HMRC defines a classic car as a model that’s 15 years old or more and worth at least £15,000. In contrast, the DVLA’s definition of classic (or historic) is any vehicle that’s 40 years old or older, in which it is labelled as a classic, but if the vehicle is used for business purposes, such as wedding rental, it may not be tax exempt.
Nostalgia
As a child, you may have seen a car that impressed you, and that inspiration might have triggered a love of car culture. Whether that was an off-road vehicle your dad drove while on holiday or whether you were blown away by a powerful supercar that you can recall watching on the television. These memories may have inspired you to buy the coveted classic model, once you have the means.
Exclusivity and rarity
An essential aspect in classifying whether a car is a classic is its exclusivity and rarity. This depends on the number of models that rolled off the production line or if there was a special edition the manufacturer included. This can elevate the status of the vehicle to a classic, making it highly desirable and in demand, particularly if it has features which are exclusive to that car.
Cultural impact
Many vehicles are labelled classics due to their cultural impact. Whether that model was featured on a motoring programme, such as Top Gear or it is associated with a famous person, like Jay Leno or Jeremy Clarkson, it can shape your overall viewpoint of cars.
The Condition of Your Vehicle
Age doesn’t determine the desirability of your vehicle but it depends on how well-maintained it is. If your vehicle retains most of its original parts and integrity, it may be considered a classic. A classic car in excellent condition will increase in value more than one that is worn and rusty.
Maintaining your historic sports car or estate is essential whether you are using it as your daily drive or as part of your car collection. Do you own a classic car?
