Do you need to charge hybrid cars?

Monday 5th February 2024

Planning to upgrade your current vehicle for a hybrid? One question you may have been asking is whether you need to charge your hybrid car. As there are different types of hybrids available, each model can vary with their charging capabilities. Formula One Autocentres is here to answer the question to ‘Do you need to charge hybrid cars?’

Is there a difference with how electric and hybrid cars are powered?

Yes, electric and hybrid vehicles are powered differently to one another. Electric cars are powered by both a battery and electric motor. Hybrid vehicles are not fully electric vehicles as they use a combination of an internal combustion engine, electric motor, and battery to power the vehicle.

What types of hybrid cars are available?

If you are looking to buy or upgrade your current vehicle for a hybrid, there are three types of hybrids to choose from.

Mild hybrid

Mild hybrids combine a petrol or diesel combustion engine with an electric motor. They operate like conventional cars, but the electric motor is designed to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy. In some scenarios, the motor can propel the car from a standing start before the combustion engine kicks in.

Self-charging hybrid

Like mild hybrids, self-charging hybrids use a traditional combustion engine with an electric motor, but they have a battery. While you drive, the power coming from the car is captured through regenerative braking, which is then stored into a battery. When the battery is fully charged, you can use the electric motor to power the car for short periods.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

Plug-in hybrids blur the lines between conventional and battery-powered cars. With a PHEV, your car can be plugged into the mains, allowing the battery to recharge. On the electric motor, you can expect to get between 20 and 30 miles on a single charge with a plug-in hybrid.

Are all hybrid cars self-charging?

No, not all hybrid cars are self-charging. As there are different types of hybrid cars, finding the right car is dependent on your driving habits and needs. For long distance journeys and commutes, you may decide to go for a PHEV. Whereas for city driving, you should consider buying a self-charging hybrid.
