Car exhausts typically last between 5 and 10 years, although poor driving conditions and maintenance can cause them to fail sooner. The silencer often corrodes first, which creates a tell-tale loud popping sound, whilst other components may last the full lifespan of your car, if looked after properly.
What impacts how long your exhaust lasts?
The lifespan of your car exhaust depends on four main factors:
- Salt and rain: Winter driving can have a negative impact on your exhaust pipe. Regular exposure to road grit combined with wet weather conditions can halve your exhaust's lifespan. Moisture trapped inside the system during cold starts creates corrosion from the inside out.
- Driving habits: Shorter journeys can prevent the exhaust from warming up fully, leaving condensation trapped inside the exhaust.
