How to add a bike carrier to your car
Wednesday 4th February 2026
If you're an avid cyclist, a bike rack is a must have accessory for your car. It’s important to ensure it’s fitted safely to avoid risking harm to other road users and damaging your bike(s). In this guide, we compare the different types of bike rack available and explain how to attach them to your car.
Types of bike rack
There are three common types of bike rack. Choosing the right one for you will depend on how often you use it, how much space you have, and what other accessories you already have fitted to your car.
Rear-mounted bike carrier
The most common and cost-effective option. Rear-mounted carriers attach to the boot using straps and hooks.
Pros: Usually the most budget friendly; easy to fit; no tow bar or roof bars required.
Cons: You may need more space when parking; bikes must be secured carefully to avoid scratches; it’s a legal requirement to keep your number plate visible and your lights functional, so be careful not to cover them up when installing.
Roof-mounted bike carriers
Roof-mounted bike carriers are a good option for lightweight bicycles. As they sit on the top of your car, you’ll need roof bars.
Pros: No risk of obscuring the number plate or rear lights; maintains access to the boot.
Cons: Lifting heavier bikes onto tall cars can be challenging. You’ll also need to be mindful of your vehicle’s height when driving under low bridges or tree branches.
Towbar bike carrier
If your car already has a towbar fitted, you could consider this type of bike carrier.. It is the most stable option but also the most expensive. They’re a good option for heavier bikes like e-bikes.
Pros: Easy to use and lift bikes into, without losing access to the boot.
Cons: Towing bikes adds length behind your car which can make parking more challenging.
How to install a bike carrier on your car
Each model of bike rack will have its own instruction manual, but as a general guideline, you can follow these steps:
How to fit a rear-mounted bike carrier to your car
Step 1 – Check the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that the rear mounted bike carrier is compatible
Step 2 – Position the carrier centrally across the boot, ensuring it rests on the metal part of your boot, not your rear windscreen.
Step 3 – Attach the straps. Remember the top straps should bear most of the weight. Once these are installed you can attach the side and bottom straps and adjust the tension evenly.
Step 4 – Hang and secure the bikes according to the manual instructions. If carrying more than one bike, you’ll likely need to alternate the direction they face. Use the frame straps and bungee cords to secure them firmly.
How to secure bikes to your roof bars
Step 1 – Make sure your car has roof bars compatible with your vehicle’s make and model.
Step 2 – Slide or clamp the carrier onto the roof bars according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 3 – Lift the bikes onto the carrier and secure the frame clamp and wheel straps tightly.
Step 4 – Do a ‘shake test’ to ensure the bikes don’t move and lock them if your carrier has locks supplied.
How to secure a towbar or tow-ball bike carrier
Step 1 – Ensure you have a towbar fitted and a compatible electrical socket.
Step 2 – Mount the carrier onto the tow ball and lock or click it into place.
Step 3 – Connect the electrics and check the brake lights, indicators and fog lights work properly.
Step 4 – Load the bikes by placing the wheels into the wheel trays, then secure the wheels and frame arms.
Don’t forget safety checks to ensure your car is roadworthy
Carrying bikes on a rack can be perfectly safe and secure, but incorrect installation can be dangerous and may result in a fine. Follow our four golden rules to stay safe and compliant:
- Ensure your number plate is clearly visible.
- Check your brake lights, indicators and fog lights.
- Make sure the load doesn’t exceed the carrier’s and your car’s weight limits.
- Ensure your view is not obstructed when driving.
