How to safely de-ice your car after frost
Monday 15th December 2025
It’s happened to all of us—running late for work on a winter’s morning, only to find your windscreen is iced over.
While it may be inconvenient, it’s important to make sure your windscreen, windows, and mirrors are clear of ice before you set out. This ensures you can make your journey safely and that you avoid breaking the law.
In this guide, we’ll explain the quickest and safest methods to de-ice your car so you can be on your way in no time.
Five steps to de-icing your car: In five minutes or less
Step 1: Start the engine
Start the engine and set the heat and fans to the highest possible settings. Warming your car from the inside out begins loosening the ice from underneath, making it easier to scrape away.
Step 2: Use a spray de-icer
A spray de-icer works quickly, melting ice within a minute or so.
You can also make your own de-icer by mixing 2 parts rubbing alcohol with 1 part water and adding a few drops of washing-up liquid.
While it might be tempting, you should never, ever, use boiling water to melt the ice as it could crack the glass.
Step 3: Brush away any loose snow or ice
Use a brush to remove any loose snow or ice so you can reach the solid ice layer. If it’s been snowing, make sure to clear the roof too.
Step 4: Scrape the ice
Use a plastic ice scraper to remove the ice after softening it with heat from inside the car. This means you won’t need to exert too much pressure to clear your windscreen and windows.
Step 5: Don’t forget the mirrors, number plates and lights!
Before you set off, scrape your mirrors to ensure visibility. Driving with an obscured number plate is illegal, so make sure it’s clear. Remaining ice on your lights can prevent proper light dispersion, affect your view of the road and potentially dazzle other drivers.
Three essential de-icing tips
If the weather forecast looks frosty, follow these practical tips to prevent ice build-up and reduce de-icing time:
- Use a frost guard or heavy blanket to insulate your windscreen overnight.
- Lift windscreen wipers to prevent them from sticking and tearing the rubber.
- Don’t keep your ice scraper and de-icer in the car—if your locks freeze, you’ll be stuck!
What happens if I don’t de-ice my car properly?
Leaving in a rush without de-icing your car properly can be dangerous and could result in a £60 - £100 fixed penalty notice (FPN) fine and 3 points on your licence.
Consequences include:
- Reduced visibility, slower reaction times, blind spots, and distorted vision from partially obscured headlights—raising the risk of winter accidents.
- Rushing or cutting corners when scraping ice could crack your windscreen or damage wipers by burning out the motor or tearing the rubber.
- You could be held legally responsible if ice or snow flies off your roof and hits other vehicles or causes accidents.
