Why does my car hum at high speeds?

how old are my tyres

Any new or unusual noise emitted by your car can be a cause for concern. But when should you be worried? Our guide explains the common reasons your car may hum at speed and what to do about it.

Why is my car humming when I drive at high speeds?

A humming noise that gets louder or increases when you accelerate could be caused by a number of different vehicle faults, such as issues with your tyres, wheel bearings or drivetrain. Some of the most common faults include:

  • Uneven tyre tread: This can be caused by incorrect tyre pressure, poor wheel alignment or worn suspension.
  • Worn wheel bearings: Wheel bearings ensure that your wheels rotate smoothly and evenly. When the bearings wear down it generates a humming or growling noise that changes pitch as your speed increases. They can also make a noise that gets louder when cornering. Left unchecked, a failing wheel bearing can impact your overall steering performance, so it’s important to get bearings checked promptly.
  • Unbalanced wheels: An unbalanced wheel creates vibrations throughout your car emanating from your steering wheel, which can result in a humming sound.
  • Differential and transmission: Worn differential or transmission components can create vibrations when accelerating and a humming or whining noise at higher speeds.
  • Seals: Damaged door or window seals allow air to pass through them at higher speeds, causing a hum or whistle.

How to find the cause of the humming

If you’re not sure what’s causing the humming, you should make a note of when the noise happens so that you have as much context about the problem as possible. A humming sound that occurs when turning could be the wheel bearing. If this noise only occurs at speed it is more likely to be uneven tyre wear.

A quick visual tyre check to look for uneven wear patterns can indicate whether it could be a wheel alignment issue.

If you’re still unsure, contact your nearest Formula One Autocentres branch to diagnose the problem. We’ll identify the cause and let you know what work needs to be done.

How to fix high-speed humming noises

Fixing your humming issue can be simple, depending on the cause.

Rotate or replace your tyres: If tyre wear is uneven, rotating your tyres may solve the problem. In cases where tyre wear is severe, the worn tyres will need to be replaced.

Check seals and roof fittings: If the humming is caused by wind noise, check and replace any damaged seals.

Balance the wheels: Wheel balancing will correct any uneven weight distribution and help prevent uneven tyre wear.

Replace wheel bearings: Wheel bearings can be replaced by a qualified technician at your nearest Formula One Autocentres branch.

Correct misaligned wheels: Book a free wheel alignment check with Formula One Autocentres, and if your wheels are out of line, our technicians can adjust the angle of your wheels to your manufacturer’s specification.
