How long is an MOT valid for?

An MOT certificate is valid for one year from the date it is issued. This means your vehicle is considered roadworthy and covers all the relevant safety and environmental standards.

There are a few things to keep in mind about your MOT expiry date:

  • Technically expired on the date: While the certificate is valid until the end of the day, it's best practice to avoid driving your car unless it's going straight to a pre-booked MOT appointment.
  • Early renewal option: You can get your MOT done up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and still keep the same renewal date for the following year.
  • Reminders are key: Missing your MOT renewal can lead to fines and potentially invalidate your insurance. Signing up for reminder services or keeping track of the expiry date yourself is crucial.
